The settlement now known as Port Orange began in 1885 on land originally part of a 1790 Spanish land grant, and its Episcopal church was listed as a mission church in the 1888 Diocesan Journal before being consecrated in 1894 by the Rt. Rev. William C. Gray, Bishop of Missionaries. It remained a mission for 92 years until receiving full parish status in 1982, when Bishop Gray, its Vicar, became its first Rector. In 1893, a Florida Carpenter Gothic style chapel measuring 65 feet long and 33 feet wide was built of native cypress and heart pine, with white batten framing and a tall bell tower topped by a cross. Dr. Charles Meeker and his wife, Mary, donated the bell and hanger, ordered from Europe, and the Meeker family also gave a three-part signed Tiffany window behind the altar showing Jesus as the Good Shepherd watching over the sheep, a window whose color changes dramatically each afternoon. In 1902, Mary Meeker donated another three-part Tiffany window in honor of her husband; on the chapel's east side, it portrays St. Luke the beloved physician and is the only Tiffany window depicting St. Luke that Tiffany made. The chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
