Grand Caverns, a limestone cave in Grottoes in Virginia’s central Shenandoah Valley, has offered public tours since 1806 and claims to be the oldest show cave in the United States. Formerly called Weyer’s Cave, it was reportedly discovered in 1804 by Bernard Weyer on land owned by Matthias Amend. Recognized as a National Natural Landmark, it is noted for shield formations, flowstone, stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, columns, and the vast Cathedral Hall. The cave also preserves Civil War-era signatures left by visiting Confederate and Union soldiers. A resurvey begun in 2004 expanded its known length to 6,083 meters, while newly found sections remain closed to the public.
