Father Junipero Serra, founder of the California missions, first brought the grape to California, beginning with the first vineyard planted at Mission San Diego in 1779, and his padres also scattered mustard seeds from Spain that produced the yellow flowers seen in vineyards each spring. General Vallejo, military commander of California under Mexican rule, founded the civilian town of Sonoma in 1834, later bottled Sonoma wine under the Lachryma Montis label, and in 1863 saw his daughters Natalia and Jovita marry Attila and Arpad, the Count's sons, in Sonoma's “Double Wedding of the Century.” Count Agoston Haraszthy, founder of the winery in 1857 and known as the “Father of California Viniculture,” did more than any other single person to create California's successful wine industry and established the first wine caves carved into a California hillside and the first stone winery buildings built before them at Buena Vista. André Tchelistcheff, born in Russia and educated in France, became America's most influential post-Prohibition winemaker, produced notable wine for Buena Vista after its rebirth in 1949, and became known as the “Father of Modern California Viniculture” for his work on malolalctic fermentation, cold stabilization, and leadership in moving Pinot Noir and Chardonnay production to the Carneros region.
