Founded in Los Angeles on October 16, 1923, by Walt and Roy O. Disney after the collapse of Laugh-O-Gram Studio, Walt Disney Animation Studios grew from modest beginnings into the Walt Disney Company’s main animation studio and one of the most influential institutions in animated cinema. Early successes included the Alice Comedies and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, but losing Oswald in 1928 led Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks to create Mickey Mouse and the breakthrough of Steamboat Willie. The studio helped establish key animation techniques, achieved a landmark with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, moved to Burbank in 1940, and remains central to Disney’s identity and popular culture.
