Rufus Wilson opened this store in 1850, and it remained in continuous operation serving National Road travelers until it closed in 1975. Janice Keefer remembered her father’s store and the 42 years that Dorsey Martin conducted business here. In 1983, Frances and Lewis Horst rescued the Wilson store and school house and restored them to their heyday splendor. Rufus Wilson also built a one-room school in 1857 to ensure that his son received an education, and the school operated for 98 years. Maria Angle, a native of Clear Spring, taught grades 1-7 there from 1913-1916, teaching 30 students each year and recalling that she seldom had discipline problems because most of the children were from farm families and were larger than she was.
