On August 8, 1804, during the journey up the Missouri River, an unusual quantity of feathers floated down the river, covering much of sixty or seventy yards of its breadth and continuing in that manner for three miles before their source became clear in the form of an immense flock of pelicans resting on a large sandbar, so numerous that they seemed to cover several acres of ground, leading to the island being named for them.
