The U.S. Air Force commissioned this observation tower on August 16, 1952, for Operation Skywatch, part of the Civilian Ground Observation Corps during the Korean War. Community volunteers constructed it, and approximately ninety people alternated shifts to maintain a twenty-four-hour watch for enemy planes because there was no national radar system.
