Temple of Israel is a Moorish Revival style synagogue built for a German Jewish reform congregation organized in 1872. Designed by Samuel Sloan of Philadelphia, with James Walker as supervising architect and the Cape Fear Building Company as builders, it is the oldest synagogue in North Carolina and one of the few in the United States still housed in its original nineteenth century building.
