This land is the traditional territory of the Kecoughtan. Land acknowledgements are a way people insert an awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights into everyday life, often at the beginning of ceremonies, lectures, and education guides. They are an explicit yet limited way to recognize the history of colonialism and First Nations as well as a need for change in settler-colonial societies. The Native Lands map is for educational purposes, is imperfect, and does not represent or intend to represent official or legal boundaries of any Indigenous nations; for definitive boundaries, contact the nation.
