Cedar Park was patented to Richard Ewen in 1666 as “Ewen upon Ewenton.” Its brick house was built about 1697 by Richard Galloway II around an earlier frame structure possibly dating to 1656, and in the 18th century it was known as “West River Farm.” It was the home and burial place of John Francis Mercer, 10th Governor of Maryland from 1801 to 1803. Tulip Hill was patented in 1659 to Richard Talbott as “Poplar Knowle.” Its brick house was built about 1756 by Quaker merchant Samuel Galloway, and George Washington recorded visits there on September 22 and 30, 1771, while traveling to and from the races at Annapolis.
