The monument honors those who made the supreme sacrifice in World War I, 1917–1918, with the words “Till the day breaks and the shadows flee away,” and it was also erected by the Headland Chapter, U.D.C., to the soldiers of the Confederacy as valiant, courageous, and unconquered, with the remembrance “Lest We Forget.”
