At the entrance of the path to Riverview Place stands a squirrel sculpture by Raffaele Menconi, who lived from 1877 to 1942, also created the aluminum eagle for the Municipal Building, and had his decorated Tuscan villa on the left side of the walk. The pathway’s distinctive hexagonal asphalt blocks, along with many of the sidewalks of Riverview Place shown around 1900, were made by the smoky Hastings Pavement Company, informally called the Fog Works, and the same blocks also appear on the walks of Central Park in Manhattan.
