Joe Joe Niekro, a Bridgeport High School graduate in the class of 1962, won 221 games during a 21-year major league career. He was the first Houston Astro pitcher to win 20 games in consecutive seasons in 1979 and 1980, was a National League All-Star in 1979, and was named The Sporting News pitcher of the year that same year. His first and only major league home run came off his brother Phil, and he is the father of major league player Lance Niekro of the San Francisco Giants. Phil Phil Niekro, a Bridgeport High School graduate in the class of 1957, was the most successful knuckleball pitcher of all time with 318 career wins. Combined with Joe's 221 career wins, the brothers became the winningest brother combination in baseball history. Phil's 121 career victories after age 40 set a major league record, he was named to the National League All-Star Team five times, won the Gold Glove Award five times, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.
