As part of General Meade’s screen for Washington during the Confederate invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania, the Third Corps of the Army of the Potomac arrived here from Taneytown on June 30, 1863. The next day, General Daniel E. Sickles marched the corps to Emmitsburg.
