The Georgia Ports Authority was created by the state in 1945 during the economic boom of World War II. Savannah and Brunswick, Georgia's deepwater ports, had a long history of global trade. The authority owns two Savannah terminals: its headquarters in Garden City, established in 1948 through the purchase of the former U.S. Quartermaster Depot, and Ocean Terminal, purchased in 1958 from the Central of Georgia Railway. Its Brunswick facilities include Mayor's Point, acquired in 1959, Colonel's Island in 1962, and East River in 1982. In 1995, it pioneered the Savannah Model of working directly with major retailers to develop nearby distribution centers. Emulated nationwide, this brought additional shipping services and cargo and benefited both importers and exporters. Savannah is now the third-busiest container gateway in the U.S., creating nearly half a million jobs and generating billions in revenue each year.
