Indian God Rock, a large sandstone boulder on the Allegheny River near Brandon in northwestern Pennsylvania, is one of the region’s most important Native American archaeological sites because of the extensive petroglyph carved into its surface. About fifty-five figures, including geometric designs and human and animal forms, have been identified, and two apparent archers are unique in Ohio River valley rock art. The carvings were likely made after AD 900, probably after 1200, and certainly before 1749, when a French expedition recorded the rock and noted that Native guides still revered it. Later tourism, archaeological study, erosion, and vandalism all shaped its modern history.
