Two large rocks found in the Savannah area are petrified logs, or permineralized fossil wood formed when groundwater added minerals to buried trees. Wood grain is easily visible in each specimen, and the differing grain patterns indicate different tree species: the smaller tree has a regular linear grain, while the larger shows a more contorted growth pattern. A smaller specimen was collected at the landfill north of Savannah, and another log was found still in place, with one side permineralized to rock and the other remaining fibrous like modern wood, an unusual fresh character now under study at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Microscope thin-sections will be used to identify the wood grain and determine the types of trees, helping reveal past environments and climate in the Savannah area. Each log represents a different geologic time period: the smaller came from Cretaceous deposits about 75 million years old, while the larger was reworked into younger gravel deposits from an earlier Tennessee River about 2 million years old.
