The Islands of the Potomac Wildlife Management Area protects 30 islands in the Potomac River along Maryland’s boundary with Virginia. Managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, it preserves 824 acres of wildlife habitat across Allegany, Washington, Frederick, and Montgomery counties, with most of the land in Montgomery County. Accessible only by boat, the islands retain a relatively secluded character. About 82 percent of the area, totaling 676 acres, also has added protection as the Islands of the Potomac Wildland. Public access is limited, though Oxley, Mason, and Maddox islands in Montgomery County are open to hunting.
