Richard B. Trotter, a Grand Island resident and Grand Island Alumni, served in the Army with Company D, 6th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On September 26th, 1968, less than one week from returning home, his company was tasked with participating in a series of airmobile assaults on suspected enemy positions. Shortly after being inserted, the company was taking heavy enemy fire and Trotter was hit by enemy machine gun fire. He died from his wounds before medics could reach him. For his exemplary service and many heroic actions during his service he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, as well as many other medals. He was laid to rest at Elm Lawn Cemetery, Kenmore, N.Y.
