George Christian Jr. lived next door to the Hardings with his wife, Stella, and sons, Warren and John. He served as Harding's personal secretary in both the U.S. Senate and the White House. In 1920, the Christians rented their Marion home to the National Republican Party for use as Harding campaign headquarters. Through the open windows, passersby could hear typewriters clacking and fragments of conversation, and they could see the publicity staff, political advisers, and the Hardings moving back and forth between the two houses. The senator's sparsely furnished campaign office occupied the Christians' former dining room. The Harding Memorial Association bought the house later in the 1920s, then tore it down in the 1950s after planning a fireproof museum but lacking the money to build it.
