Chessie Nature Trail is a six-mile path along the Maury River linking Buena Vista and Lexington on the former roadbed of a Chesapeake and Ohio Railway branch. The corridor reflects the valley’s changing transportation history: in the 1800s, canal locks and dams carried agricultural goods, iron products, and passengers from Lexington to Glasgow and toward Richmond, and the railroad later replaced that route. After the 1969 flood caused by Hurricane Camille’s remnants destroyed much of the branch, part of the line was abandoned and the right-of-way was donated to create a public trail. Today it preserves canal and railroad remains while serving recreation.
