On Oct. 19, 1864, Maj. Gen. W.T. Sherman, commanding the Union Military Div. of the Mississippi at Summerville, GA., moved the Army of the Tennessee, the Army of the Ohio, and the Army of the Cumberland to Gaylesville; with attachments, the armies numbered approximately 60,000 troops.
