Patawomeck People at Belle Plains
History
3
For centuries, the creek provided fish for the Patawomeck people, who taught colonists how to fish to survive, plant vegetables previously unknown to the English, and hunt in the forests. A surviving remnant of the Patawomeck became commercial fishermen in the 19th century, and their descendants continue to work as watermen today. Many Patawomeck words have thus been incorporated permanently into the English language.
