Captain Nathaniel G. T. Hart, brother-in-law of Henry Clay and inspector general of the American Army of the Northwest under Harrison, was killed here during the River Raisin massacre on January 22–23, 1813. Wounded in battle, he was rescued by a doctor from a log cabin field hospital just before it was set on fire by Indians. Escorted by a friendly Pottawattamie and on horseback, he was about to escape when he was shot down by a Wyandot. Hart was one of many sons of well known Kentucky families who sacrificed their lives in a desperate effort to extend American protection to the pioneer settlers of the River Raisin.
