Constitutional Oak was presented to David Q. Eggleston, a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1902. It was later planted by his son, John W. Eggleston, and by John R. Hutcheson, who became president and chancellor of Virginia Polytechnic Institute; John W. Eggleston later became chief justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals.
