Born on Valentine’s Day 1913 in Clifton, Ohio, Wayne Woodrow "Woody" Hayes grew up in Newcomerstown, where he was captain of the Newcomerstown High School football team as a senior. He played tackle at Denison University and graduated in 1935, then became head football coach at New Philadelphia High School three years later. A history fanatic and staunch patriot, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and eventually reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander during World War II. After returning to the United States, he became head coach at Denison and ended his three-year tenure on an 18-game winning streak, with his teams winning consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference titles. After reviving Miami University in two seasons, he moved to Ohio State, where from 1951-1978 he led the Buckeyes to five national championships and 13 Big Ten titles, while producing three Heisman Trophy winners, 56 first-team All-Americans, and 205 victories. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983.
