Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, a 50-acre nonprofit garden near Richmond, stands on land with a long history, from Powhatan Indian hunting grounds to the estate of Lewis Ginter and later Grace Arents. Arents transformed the property into a children’s convalescent home before making it her residence, Bloemendaal, and left it to Richmond to become a botanical garden honoring her uncle. After years of municipal use and planning, the garden organization was chartered in 1981 and expanded through major fundraising in 2004. Today it combines themed gardens, education, exhibitions, plant science, and seasonal community programs, with continued growth into the 21st century.
