Mescalero Ridge in eastern New Mexico marks the western edge of the Llano Estacado and is closely tied to the Mescalero Sands along its western flank. The sands, named for the Mescalero Apaches who hunted there, sometimes spread over the ridge onto the plateau itself. Their south dune area is a National Natural Landmark with three mobile dunes and oak shinnery, shaped from an ancient lakebed by persistent winds. Human presence extends back at least 11,500 years, with later use by buffalo hunters and settlers. The ridge and sands remain significant for ecology, natural history, recreation, and regional wildlife.
