The world's largest freshwater sand dunes line the southern shores of Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan is the fifth largest lake in the world and the largest lake in Indiana, and more than 3,500 ships and planes lie at its bottom. Its southern point is the only Great Lake entirely within the United States. The Great Lakes system contains 20% of the planet's freshwater and provides millions of people with international transportation, food, recreation, and beauty, while also bringing cooler springs and summers and warmer falls and winters. Lake Michigan has a maximum length of 307 miles, a maximum width of 118 miles, a minimum width of 91 miles, a maximum depth of 923 feet, and a shoreline length of 1,400 miles. Its name comes from the Ojibwa word "Mishigami," meaning "Large Lake."
