Transportation
Latimer Reef Light stands on Latimer’s Reef in Fishers Island Sound, about a mile northwest of East Point on Fishers Island, New York, marking a hazardous stretch of water once known as Latemore’s Reef after James Latemore. Completed in 1884, this sparkplug lighthouse rises from 18 feet of water on a 30-foot-diameter cylindrical caisson foundation filled with concrete and supports a 46-foot cast-iron superstructure. Its white tower, watch room, decagonal lantern, and brown stripe reflect the type’s distinctive design. Recognized as a historic property, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, while preservation protections and its navigation functions remained in place after its 2008 surplus designation.
