The congregation of New Prospect Baptist Church formally organized on June 3, 1820, with a membership of twenty-six. They met at a simple log cabin meeting house near this site before erecting a larger building in 1837. Before 1820, congregants are thought to have met at leaders’ homes as Mount Vernon Baptist Church. New Prospect was initially part of the Broad River Association of Baptists, later joining the Tyger River Association in 1844. Worshippers included local families and some of the people they held as slaves. Fires destroyed the church in 1922 and 1983, and the current church was finished in 1984.
