Baseball in Nicodemus began with a first team organized in 1886 under manager Joe Patterson, followed by teams from 1891 to 1903 under John Sadler and from 1907 to 1908 under James Merrit with associate manager Neal Sadler. These teams played surrounding towns, and the 1907 to 1908 team ranged as far east as Solomon City, Kansas, west to the Colorado line, south to Ness City, and north to the Nebraska line. From 1920 to 1950, teams continued to organize and play local opponents, and Satchel Paige of the Kansas City Monarchs was said to have come and played. Games were held at a field across the road from Scruggs Grove, southwest of town, where annual Emancipation Celebrations took place. In the 1970s, a new field was built on the town site, and baseball remained there until 2013, when it moved to the present diamond at Roberta Robinson Field south of the Nicodemus Villa Housing complex. Team names included the Cyclones, Nicodemus Blues, Old Hickory, and the Nicodemus Hill Billies, a secondary team in the 1940s. A later revival appeared in the Nicodemus Blues II, a vintage baseball club active from 2010 to 2013 and made up largely of descendants of former Nicodemus Blues players.
