Greenbelt was the first green town built from scratch in 1936 as part of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. Unlike most towns that develop gradually over a long period of time, the entire community was completely mapped on paper before any construction work began. Although many more green towns were planned, only two others were built. Greenbelt is a unique community with parks, playgrounds, green spaces, pathways, and numerous sites throughout the city.
