Lincoln Tomb
Springfield, Illinois
History
Lincoln Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, is the burial place of Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln, and three of their sons. Created from the national mourning after Lincoln’s assassination, the monument began in 1868 and was completed in 1874 to a design by Larkin Goldsmith Mead. Its granite obelisk, military sculpture, marble interior, and inscribed texts make it both tomb and memorial. Lincoln’s remains were moved several times, including after an 1876 theft plot, before being placed in a final vault beneath the burial room. Later restorations and nearby war memorials broadened the site into a larger landscape of remembrance.
