John M. Davenport was a stock-raiser and captain of a company of volunteer Indian fighters who was killed near here by 30 Comanches. The inquest for him was the first in the area for an Indian victim. Settlers and soldiers from Fort Inge trailed the band 200 miles, and after a battle they found Davenport's gun on one of the Indians.
