Cocke County in Tennessee was established in 1797 and named in honor of Senator William Cocke, who served in 1796, 1797, and from 1799 to 1805, was an officer of the Revolutionary Army, one of the leaders of the State of Franklin, and a member of the Legislature of the Territory South of the Ohio River. North Carolina, one of the original 13 colonies, was reportedly named for England's Charles II. Virginia Dare, the first child born of white parents on the North American continent, was born in the lost colony on August 18, 1587. The first permanent settlement was made at the mouth of the Cape Fear River in 1660.
