In Gallatin, Bishop Lula Mae Swanson founded and pastored the Original Church of God for fifty-five years, one of three churches she established along with Original Church of God congregations in Belvidere and Hartsville, Tennessee. Members joined Bishop Swanson every Sunday to sing as she hosted and preached on the radio program “Bringing the Church to You” on Gallatin station WHIN 1010-AM. In 1954, using her personal funds, Bishop L.M. Swanson established a nursing home across the street from the church for members of her congregation and elderly African American citizens. The first facility in Gallatin, Tennessee, to serve African Americans with convalescent care, it provided daily religious services along with quality health care for twenty-three patients.
