From 1933 to 1945 in Europe, the Nazis murdered six million Jews in the Holocaust, including more than one million children, solely because they were Jews. This genocide brought degradation, starvation, torture, rape, experimentation on human beings, gas chambers, crematoria, and mass executions, and in concentration camps Jews suffered and died amid what were called monuments to man's capacity for evil. Jews also carried out heroic resistance in cities, ghettos, forests, and even in the death camps themselves. People of different faiths risked their lives to save Jews, while the world's silence and [text missing] led not only to the Holocaust but also to the deaths of millions of other people. Out of such darkness and despair came a call to create light and rekindle hope.
