A petroglyph at Parowan Gap tells of a migration from an old world to a new one along a long trail where many suffered famine, drought, water crossings, cold, ice, and hot sun. It also portrays a great Leader, and when the people arrived in the new land, conflict arose and the Leader was killed. An arrow inside his head touching the top of his head signifies that he knew he would die, and the full petroglyph shows him only as a head and body without arms and upside down to indicate his death. From 1990-2000, archaeo-astronomer Nowell ("Nal") Morris and archaeologist V. Garth Norman studied Parowan Gap and its petroglyphs, believing that American Indians found in the Gap's geological features a way to chart seasonal celestial movements and that the petroglyphs record this astronomical knowledge.
