Bailey County was part of Bexar Territory from 1836 to 1876, was created on August 21, 1876, and was organized on November 5, 1918. It was named in honor of Peter James Bailey, a Kentucky lawyer who lived from 1812 to 1836 and was killed defending the Alamo. Muleshoe is the county seat.
