Yaquina Head Light, established near Newport on the Oregon coast in 1873, is Oregon’s tallest lighthouse and still serves as an active aid to navigation. Its most notable feature is the original first-order Fresnel lens made in Paris in 1868, which remains in use and projects a beam visible 19 miles at sea in a distinctive flash pattern. The station was long staffed by keepers, later transferred from the U.S. Lighthouse Service to the U.S. Coast Guard, and was automated in 1966. Today, within the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, it endures as both a working lighthouse and a prominent historic coastal landmark.
