Cliff Palace reflects a people who lived among these cliffs, canyons, and mesa tops for seven hundred years before migrating farther south to establish new communities and neighborhoods, passing down skills, traditions, artistry, and knowledge from generation to generation and forming foundations of modern Pueblo culture. Many Pueblo people trace their ancestry to the Four Corners region and occasionally return to honor their past, their ancestors, and their ancestral homeland. With at least 150 rooms, Cliff Palace was an exceptionally large cliff dwelling built in a special location within a vibrant, active community, and several features suggest it served as an important gathering place, perhaps an administrative or governmental center for the Ancestral Pueblo society centered around these canyons. The people of the area knew dozens of footpaths linking villages with storage structures, farming areas, water sources, and public buildings including Sun Temple and Cliff Palace.
