Camp Sabinal was established on July 12, 1856 by Captain Albert G. Brackett of the Second U.S. Cavalry to protect the San Antonio - El Paso Road and frontier settlers. It was occupied by Federal troops until November, 1856, and later served as a Ranger camp.
