Since 1803, a lighthouse near Cape Hatteras has warned mariners of the Diamond Shoals, dangerous shifting sands just under the ocean surface where ships wrecked. For more than 130 years, 82 known lighthouse keepers kept the light shining to guide ships to safe passage and save mariners' lives. The foundation stones of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse were later moved from their original location and became the Keepers of the Light Amphitheater. After the lighthouse was moved in 1999, the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society engraved the remaining foundation stones with each keeper's name and service start date. In 2014, the stones were moved again to protect this piece of heritage from the encroaching sea, and they now form the amphitheater. Keeper John Bunyan Quidley, his wife Emma, daughter Marie, and dog Pechichi were photographed at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Double Keeper's Quarters in 1908.
