Pajarito Mountain Ski Area is a ski resort on the north face of Pajarito Mountain in north central New Mexico, west of Los Alamos. Opened in 1957 with minimal facilities and only a few short slopes, it expanded gradually through added terrain, new lifts, and a lodge completed for the 1988–1989 season. Its name links Spanish and Tewa traditions, reflecting the nearby archaeological site of Tsirege, or “bird place.” Today it offers forty-four runs, a mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced terrain, multiple lifts, and winter services. After damage from the 2011 Las Conchas Fire, it reopened that same season and also serves year-round recreation, especially mountain biking.
