The first school in Goffs opened for the fall term in 1911, serving cattle ranches, mining districts, homesteaders, the railroad, and especially the people supporting expanding travel on the National Old Trails Road, later U.S. Highway 66. A new mission-style school designed by architect A. Beimer was built in 1914 by Tom Ware on land donated by H. P. Ware, and it became a source of pride for the community. The building served as both a school and community center until the spring of 1937, when the realignment of U.S. Highway 66 and other factors had diminished the population. It returned to private ownership in 1938 and was used as a private residence until 1954. During World War II, it stood in the midst of a large desert training center army camp, with more than 10,000 soldiers there at some times. The building was abandoned from 1954 to 1982, then acquired by Jim and Bertha Wold in 1982, who began restoration, followed by further restoration beginning in 1990 by the Friends of the Mojave Road.
