Middletown was founded by Hiram S. Allen on October 13, 1832, and is the oldest town in Logan County. Logan County was created from Sangamon County in 1839. In June 1833, Abraham Lincoln, then living in New Salem, witnessed the deed to the first lot sold in the new community. The town became a stagecoach stop midway between Peoria and Springfield. In June 1837, during his famous western tour, Daniel Webster spoke to schoolchildren in Middletown. The community also laid out two race tracks, and horse races were held twice a year for two weeks each time.
