After the initial success of the Confederate charge, a large contingent of Southern cavalry occupied the center of Hanover while some Union cavalrymen still fought defensively in places or hid. Squads of the 2nd North Carolina and 13th Virginia Cavalry Regiments brought in captured Union soldiers, and near the intersection ahead Reverend William Zieber saw Confederates riding down Abbottstown Street toward the Square with Union prisoners and ambulance wagons. Earlier, after they had passed out Frederick Street, Reverend Wm. K. Zeilber and Dr. George Hinkel picked up three or four dead soldiers lying in the street between Centre Square and the Reformed Church and carried them to the sidewalks. A few blocks north, Union troops at the Public Commons were reorganizing after Major John Hammond had led the veteran 5th New York Cavalry Regiment there, and small groups of the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment joined them in an open field to form a line ready to charge Center Square.
