William Falkner (1825~1889) moved to Ripley in 1842. A lawyer, soldier, and president of the Ripley Railroad Co., Falkner wrote several books, including The White Rose of Memphis. He is believed to have been the inspiration for his great~grandson William Faulkner's novel Sartoris. The Falkner house stood here from 1865 to 1937.
