This small sandpit, encompassing 18 acres of wetlands and known today as Leo's Landing, was historically the West Boat Livery. Leo Hess and others operated the West Boat Livery and docks here from 1938 until the 1960's, serving the public as a boating mooring and boat rental. Only a few pilings from the boat landings remain visible. Although the area's recreational use has changed, it is now classified as an Environmentally Sensitive Area and serves as critical habitat for migrating birds such as the marsh wren, while also supporting plant species of special concern including silverweed and river bulrush.
